On November 4, 2025, California voters will face a defining moment—one that could determine the future of democracy across the United States.
In recent months, we’ve witnessed a disturbing erosion of democratic norms driven by federal overreach. States like Texas and Missouri have taken extreme, behind-the-scenes actions to strip millions of residents of fair representation in Congress. We are also seeing ongoing attacks on women’s health, the trans community, and a rise in political violence nationwide. The actions taking place today will have lasting consequences for women and non-binary people for years to come. This isn’t just partisan politics—it’s a coordinated, unprecedented power grab aimed at rigging the 2026 election by manipulating congressional maps to favor one party.
In response, Governor Gavin Newsom and the California State Legislature have placed Proposition 50 (“the Election Rigging Response Act”) on the November ballot. This critical measure empowers California to temporarily redistrict in order to counteract the anti-democratic actions coming from Washington and beyond.
If redistricting is manipulated to favor one political party, it will directly affect which legislators are elected—and therefore which policies are passed on reproductive rights, gender equity, LGBTQ+ protections, and more. Proposition 50 ensures that voters, not politicians, have the final say in how we defend our representative democracy. Recognizing the historic stakes of this special election, the San Francisco Women’s Political Committee (SFWPC) PAC has voted to issue a Yes Endorsement Recommendation to our membership.
