On August 22nd, President Donald Trump threatened to send the National Guard to San Francisco to ‘clean-up’ the city. We condemn President Trump’s threats that instill fear amongst our immigrant communities and create political turmoil amongst our democratic city. President Trump has spread lies that San Francisco is filled with crime. San Francisco has seen significant crime reductions over the last 23 years. By emphasizing San Francisco is a dangerous city, it hinders our ability to enjoy our everyday life and instills fear of federal government overreach.
This threat must be a wake up call for all our elected officials. We saw what happened to Los Angeles and what is currently taking place in Washington D.C. Our city will not stand for the overreach of power by the federal government. We must ensure that our city has the resources, services, and power to protect our most vulnerable communities who will be impacted by this action.
We commend Supervisor Bilal Mahmood for speaking out publicly against President Trump’s threats to our democracy in San Francisco and Assessor-Recorder Joaquin Torres for speaking in support of our immigrant communities. We hope other elected officials in City Hall will follow suit.
The San Francisco Women’s Political Committee stands with our immigrant community, opposes autocratic policy, and will support efforts to mobilize against these actions from the federal government.
