Dear Mayor Daniel Lurie,
On behalf of the San Francisco Women’s Political Committee (SFWPC), we write to urge you to appoint a woman-identifying Supervisor in District 4 following the recent recall of Supervisor Joel Engardio.
Although we did not take a position on the recall itself, we appreciate Supervisor Engardio’s time on the Board and wish him well. We are focused on ensuring that his replacement reflects the values and needs of District 4, particularly in these times of political upheaval.
With the rich history of successful District 4 women supervisors, including Carmen Chu, Fiona Ma, and Katy Tang, we firmly believe that a woman is essential not only for representation, but for restoring stability, accountability, and community trust.
As an organization, advocating for gender equity, advancing gender parity in political representation, and supporting women in political spaces are core reasons for our existence. In today’s political climate, it is essential that San Francisco stand by women and girls of all experiences, beginning with proper representation on the Board of Supervisors. Diverse voices strengthen policymaking and reflect the full spectrum of San Francisco communities. Women — especially those from marginalized backgrounds — remain underrepresented, and in moments of transition such as this, both symbolic and substantive leadership matter. Without an appointment that addresses the City’s existing gender imbalance, the persistent gap in representation on the Board of Supervisors will only widen.
We urge you to prioritize the appointment of a woman-identifying leader, who can bring both the skills and ability to heal and unify District 4. We look forward to your support in building a strong bench of women elected officials, drawing from San Francisco’s many capable and qualified candidates.
Thank you for your commitment and continued leadership in protecting, supporting, and advancing women in our City.
Sincerely,
SFWPC Board of Directors
