A Failure of Leadership and Support
The resignation of Beya Alcaraz as District 4 Supervisor reflects a serious failure in how our City identifies, vets, and supports women leaders.
While we recognize Alcaraz’s community ties, willingness to step up, and previous missteps, the responsibility for this outcome rests with the Mayor’s office. They advanced a young woman into public office without proper vetting or ensuring she had the preparation and backing required to succeed.
Women who step forward to lead deserve a City that stands with them. Instead, this process exposed a candidate, created unnecessary turmoil for a District that has already seen more than its share, and undermined trust in our institutions.
District 4 residents still need stable leadership — especially at such a critical time for the Sunset and our city. It is not fair to them or to future women leaders for political mismanagement to jeopardize that need.
San Francisco can and must do better. We call on the Mayor and his administration to adopt a transparent, rigorous, and timely appointment process and to provide real, sustained support to any woman entrusted with public leadership.
We hoped this would end up working out. We believed, and still believe, in a woman leader for the Sunset who could hit the ground running. But belief without real support is meaningless. Sunset residents deserve better. Women in this city deserve better.
SFWPC stands ready to be a partner in building a better future — working with and holding the Lurie administration accountable to ensure no other woman in our city is left to fend for herself after stepping up to serve.
