Mayor London Breed:
We are writing to you regarding the vacancies you will be filling with appointments on the San Francisco School Board of Education for the seats vacated by the three recalled School Board members. The San Francisco Women’s Political Committee recommends you appoint a woman, or women, with a background in education, or who have kids in the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD). Additionally, while we supported the successful recall of two of the three Board of Education commissioners, we are sensitive to concerns that accurate representation which reflects the SFUSD community will now be absent from the Board. SFWPC requests you to consider selecting appointees of Black, AAPI and Latino identity to ensure the Board of Education has adequate representation of the large share of AAPI and Latino students enrolled in SFUSD. It is critical that the Black student population, while smaller than the AAPI or Latino student populations, continue to have representation on the Board.
The San Francisco Women’s Political Committee has proudly endorsed qualified women candidates for these roles and will continue to do so in the future. We hope the people you appoint will lead the San Francisco School Board of Education in a direction that rebuilds trust with parents, students, teachers and the community and will help lead the institution as we transition into a post-pandemic learning environment.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
San Francisco Women’s Political Committee
